Henry Purcell, Fantasias in Four Parts, Winterthur String Orchestra, Walter Goehr
Edited for String Orchestra by Walter Goehr, Universal Edition, Vienna, 1956).
"[...] Fantasia No. 1 in G Minor, marked Moderate, opens with the theme announced by the second violins, then given in turn to the violas, first violins and cellos. After twenty-two measures the tempo becomes slower, with a chorale-like, seven measure passage serving as a sort of transition. A brisk section in canonic style closes the work.
Fantasia No. 2 in B Flat Major, marked Slow, begins with a sort of introduction of ten measures, which lead to a fugal section with the instruments entering in the order of violas, second violins, cellos, and finally first violins. Purcell's harmonic technique is truly amazing here; he employs chromatic effects which anticipate by nearly a hundred years those achieved by Mozart. A tempo change brings another quick sequence which leads to the conclusion.
Fantasia No. 3 in F Major, marked Fast, is a delicately wrought creation. The fugal beginning leads to a slower section, somewhat religious in character and effective in its use of suspensions. It continues with a faster episode and concludes with eight slow measures recalling the mood of the béginning.
Fantasia No. 4, marked Slow, is perhaps the most striking example of all in the use of consonance and dissonance, another device which Purcell employed to achieve variety. After twenty-five measures a fast section serves as transition to a Poco allargando. Two more changes of tempo contribute to the episodic form of this Fantasia.
Fantasia No. 5 in D Minor, also Slow, is striking in its pastoralelike opening. Its tender, quiet beauty contrasts with a more assertive and vigorous section, reflecting Purcell's dramatic insight.
Fantasia No. 6 in A Minor, again Slow, shows further evidence of Purcell's cyclic use of keys, in itself an innovation in his era. Here again, variety is achieved through effective tempo changes and brilliant use of imitation.
Fantasia No. 7, marked Moderate, though similar in form to the other fugal Fantasias in this set, bas a distinct gaiety and dance-like quality which set it apart. Concluding in fugal style, the work gains a measure of brilliance through vigorous bowing effects.
Fantasia No. 8 reverts to G Major and is marked Moderately slow. A slow middle section leads to a third episode, brisk in tempo and notable for the rare prominence of the violins.
Fantasia No. 9, marked Rather slow, is the last of the set. Here Purcell employs to advantage combined techniques of suspension and syncopation. [...]"
