Johann Sebastian BACH, Cantate "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis" (J'avais tant de peine), BWV 21, Rosl SCHWAIGER, soprano, Lorna SYDNEY, alto, Hugues CUÉNOD, ténor, Alois PERNERSTORFER, basse, Karl MAYERHOFER, hautbois, Daniel PINKHAM, clavecin, Kurt RAPF, orgue, WIENER KAMMERCHOR, WIENER SYMPHONIKER, Jonathan STERNBERG, Bach Guild BG-501 H8-OP-9965/66, 1950, Wien

"[...] For this recorded performance, as for all other releases of The Bach Guild, the size of the choral and orchestral forces employed has been held within the limits of that employed by Bach himself. Too often, in the performance of Bach choral works, the number of musiciens used is so overwhelming that many of the contrapuntal lines become obscured and the result is a huge blur of sound. In this reading, the chorus numbered twenty-four voices in all, with six on each part.
The orchestra, comprising members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, employed four first violins, four second violins, three violas, two Cellos and two basses.

The organ was an 18th century positif especially resurrected from a museum for these records. Its discreet volume and timbre are eminently better suited to its accompanying role than those of a modern organ. Incidentally, occasional pings and thumps heard before the organ starts operation are inherent in its 200 year old mechanism.
The trio of trumpets employed in the final Alleluja chorus are also authentic, being eight-foot Bach instruments capable of negotiating their extremely difficult high parts with ease and with the proper tonal balance. While the inscription on the title page indicates that Bach originally wrote a tympani part for the last movement of Cantata No. 21, it has not cme down to us. For this performance, the conductor reconstructed a part in appropriate style.
Lorna Sydney, Alois Pernerstorfer and Rosl Schwaiger are members of the Vienna State Opera. Hugues Cuenod is a distinguished French lieder singer who worked for many years with Nadia Boulanger.

The Bach Guild wishes to express its gratitude to Professor Martin Bernstein, noted Bach expert of New York University, for his cooperation and invaluable assistance in hoice of tempi, scoring and other matters of interpretation. Due thanks must also go to The Bach Guild's Honorary Board of Advisors: Professor Marion Bauer of the Juilliard School of Music and New York University; Dr. Felix Guenther of New Haven State Teachers College; Dr. Hans Rosenwald, Dean of the Chicago Musical College and Editor-in-Chief of Music News Magazine; and to Mr. Gerald Gelbloom of Peabody Conservatory. Finally, a vote of appreciation for the gifted conductor, Jonathan Sternberg, who in the final analysis brought all plans to fruition.[...]"

Voici donc...
